From the Head of School

It is my pleasure to introduce you to a wonderful community of learners located just inside the Beltway in Annandale, Virginia. Pinecrest School, a nonsectarian independent school, has been nurturing young minds since 1957.

Ms. McDermott Pinecrest's school-year programs include half-day preschool, Monday through Friday, for three and four-year-olds and full-day kindergarten through fifth grade, with sixth grade beginning in 2008-09.

The five-day preschool program establishes a foundation for future learning by developing fine and gross motor skills, speech and language skills, and basic phonics and mathematics. The full-day kindergarten program, offering space for eighteen students with two teachers, is designed to ease children into academic work, while balancing their need for informal activity and play. The elementary grades each have a maximum class size of fifteen students and provide a structured and challenging academic curriculum in phonics, reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies, while maintaining a supportive and nurturing atmosphere. Additionally, all children participate in computer, French, library, music, and physical education classes on a regular basis.

Pinecrest’s summer camp program, Pinecrest Summer Pavilion, offers a wide variety of specialty and creative themed classes for rising K-6 students. Morning, afternoon, or full-day sessions are offered. Please visit the Summer Camp section of this website to learn more.

After-care until 6 p.m. is available to K-6 students during the school year and summer camp.

Ms. McDermott with students Pinecrest’s campus includes two buildings and reflects the spirit of the school's mission – the comfortable atmosphere of the older building represents the school's nurturing philosophy while the newer building of a more formal design conveys the school's rigorous academic focus. An individualized approach, small class sizes, an experienced and caring faculty, regular parent communication, and an active school community all combine to balance the Pinecrest School experience.

If you are a parent looking for the right fit for your child's next learning environment, I encourage you to investigate the advantages of a Pinecrest School education. Please review our website or call the school office at 703.354.3446 for more information.

Onward!

Nicole McDermott
